Who We Are
Ga Dangme Association is basically a group of people from the Ga Dangme Clan descending from various areas in Accra, through Dodowa, Somanya, Odumase. Ada to Osudoku, Prampram and Ningo living in and around the great city of Columbus, Ohio coming together as one unit to support each other and remind ourselves in maintaining our Ga Dangme Cultural values and help build our various communities back home in Ghana.
Every year, we come together to celebrate one of our various festivals which includes Homowo, Asafotufiam, Kloyosikplem, Ngmayem, Dipo etc. Members are asked to vote and decide on which Festival to celebrate each year, then the Events and Planning Committee takes over. Every year, we strive to improve upon the previous year’s in every deliberation. We welcome and encourage everyone from the Ga Adangbe jurisdiction or division to visit us on one of our meeting days to witness what we do and what we stand for.
Dangme is a Kwa language, part of the Niger-Congo family. It is closely related to Ga, and together they form the Ga-Dangme branch within Kwa. It is the aboriginal language spoken in Ghana by the people of Ada, Osudoko, Manya Krobo, Tito Krobo, Shai, Ningo, Prampram- and Kpone. It is true to say that at Kpone, though a Dangme town, the people speak Ga more than their indigenous language.
However, this enigma, brought about by their close association with the Ga’s was solved gradually with the introduction of Adangme as a school subject in the Dangme areas. The lan of these different tribes stretched from the northward coast to the Akwapim hills, it has all the Dangmeland on the east and the Ga villages on the west, Bawaleshi, which is about 4.8 kilometers southwest of Dodowa, is the last Dangme town close to the Akwapim and the Ga boundaries.
There are six main dialects which coincide with political divisions. The coastal dialects are Ada, Ningo and Prampram (gbug-bla). The inland dialects are Shai (Se), Krobo (Kb) and Osudoku. Due to the geopolitical significance of the land occupy, these ethnic groups have historically mixed with the Aknas thus some aspects of the Akan culture can be seen within the Ga-Adangme culture.
